Located near the Burmese border, Sangklaburi is home to a diverse population of 45,000. The larger part of this population is the Burmese immigrants and Karen or Mon hill tribes. They are often stateless, without nationality or proper human rights. As a result, many children suffer from poverty and neglect, abandonnement/or loss of parents, lack of education, fear and hopelessness.

To confront these problems, Baan Unrak School, registered with the Thai Ministry of Education, opened its doors on March 25, 2005 to the children of Sangklaburi. Now in its second year, the school has 210 students.
